Happy Groundhog Day!
Groundhog Day has some interesting roots. Celebrated on February 2nd, the tradition is based on the superstition that if a groundhog sees its shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If the groundhog doesn't see its shadow, spring will come early.
While popularized by the 1993 film starring Bill Murray, the tradition dates back to 1840 in the U.S. and as early as 1750 in Canada. It originates from the German-speaking regions of Europe, where a hedgehog was traditionally used to predict the weather. In North America, groundhogs became the official meteorologists as they were more abundant than hedgehogs (although bears and badgers are used in other countries). Famous North American groundhogs include Punxsutawney Phil, Wiarton Willie, Shubenacadie Sam, Staten Island Chuck, General Beau Lee, Buckeye Chuck, Manitoba Merv, Winnipeg Wyn, and Balzac Billy.
Despite the spotlight on this critter’s big moment, the groundhog’s prediction is only about 30-40% accurate. While it’s fun to watch the festivities, we’d rather offer you a bit more certainty when it comes to one of the biggest decisions in life—buying or selling your home.
